Pusher Chatkit: Designing a Developer-Friendly Chat SDK

I designed the UI/UX and design system for Pusher Chatkit, a real-time chat SDK that made chat integration effortless for developers. By balancing usability with flexibility, I ensured Chatkit was intuitive out-of-the-box while allowing for full customisation.

Challenges & Outcomes
  • Designing for developers, not end users → Unlike traditional UX, Chatkit was built for developers integrating chat into their own products. I designed a clear, intuitive UI that worked out-of-the-box while offering flexibility for customisation.
  • Balancing usability with flexibility → Chatkit needed to be developer-friendly but not restrictive. I built a scalable design system, allowing teams to modify and extend UI components while maintaining consistency.
  • Standing out in a competitive market → With multiple chat SDKs available, the UX had to make Chatkit feel easier to adopt and integrate compared to alternatives. My work helped position Chatkit as an approachable, developer-focused solution.
